How do we feel about the new sequel going straight to DVD. It's come to my attention that there's mixed feelings about it because straight to DVD has a number of stigmas against it.
A) lapse in quality. Some seem to think that the movie not getting a theatrical release automatically means it's not going to be as good as the other entries. Experience has shown us this. "Hellraiser", "Puppet Master" But to that I say, and not to offend any Seed fans, that movie set the bar pretty low in terms of what to expect from this series, I honestly think you can only go up from there.
B) Lower budget. It's been seen time and time again that movies who's sequel make it to the 'home entertainment" variety, always get the lower end in terms of production value. I don't know if a film not getting a theatrical release means the studio doesn't believe in the production and therefore the team is given a lower budget to work with, but for some reason the fx of straight to dvd films seem to always decline in terms of it's predecessors.
If it's any comfort, from what I understand all the films were made with a minimal budget with he last film being the lowest I think, of ten million, which in terms of movie making isn't a lot so I don't think it would effect them that much, or at all.
C) It's where movies go to die. The series has been in limbo arguably since the success, ironically enough, of Bride. Don has stated that eh always ran into trouble with getting the Chucky films out after the third, because the movie studios were "embarrassed of a movie of that caliber being as successful as it was and being attached to their studio". That would account for Seed of Chucky making it's debut on Universals subsidiary, "Rougue pictures". To that say with less studio influence and pressure on pulling in a certain number of ticket sales, by using the dvd format, I would say less pressure ensures more movies to come, I think
What do you all think ?
