Hi guys! So after reading Carrie a third time (I think, I've read it many other times before), and after viewing all the movies hundreds of times; I decided to review and compare the book to the three movies (excluding the sequel to the 1976 movie).
If you haven't seen or read the book/ movies and don't want it spoiled, don't read this. However, if you have, continue reading.
To begin, this book is my favorite book of all time! I can relate to Carrie White in many ways, I was bullied my entire life (not to the extent of this of course). But I always felt a connection to Carrie.
So, let's start off with the book!
I'm not going to put a summary down because this is the Internet, and you can look it up yourself (not to sound condescending).
This book was brilliantly written in my opinion. I love the different view points King puts into this story. It builds up to the eventual wreckage that happens later! Upon reading, I found Carrie to be quite normal. Besides the fact that her mother is insane. If you've ever been a victim of bullying, you will sympathize with carrie.
The devastation of not only the school, but the entire town is very horrifying! In the book, it says that it is up with the assignation of Kennedy on terms of nation wide shock. To me, this ultimately represents Carrie's revenge. No one helped her, so she destroyed them all.
I give this book 4/5 stars! Although I love it, I think if King had more time to write it, he only wrote in 2 weeks, it would have been better than what it was. If you haven't read it, I definitely recommend it.
Now, the 1976 adaptation!
Again , no summary.
I don't know what positive things I can say about this movie.... It was ok, but could've been a hell of a lot better. From what I've heard, the original screen play was a lot truer to the book.
I didn't like piper Laurie as Margaret, in the book she wasn't an overacting crazy woman. She was a very crazy woman. I also didn't like sissy spacek as Carrie. I know a lot people will disagree with me but, I just didn't like her role. I also didn't like John travolta as billy Nolan. The Villy in the book was truly evil, however this portrayal shows him as a blabbering idiot who know he's an idiot but acts tough to get respect, which is pathetic.
Another thing I didn't like was the many name changes and complete confidant if characters. They switched Norma Watson and Tina Blake around. They also changed ms. Desjardin's name into ms. Collins for some reason.
I really didn't like this movie, so I'll give it 2/5. It had some good scenes, like Carrie trying on lipstick and the prom scene was ok. It could've been A LOT better.
Next, the 2002 version.
I know a lot of people haven't heard or seen this movie yet, so let me give you guys a little background info. In 2002, NBC made an adaptation of Carrie in order to kind of rip off the dead zone series. They wanted to do the same with Carrie, this movie being the pilot. The series never took off, which I'm kind off on the fence about. But we'll get to that later.
I really love this movie! It's a hell of a lot better of an adaptation the the first, and it's got a modern flare to it. Of course this was a TV movie, so you can't expect the effects to be top notch, but they were good for time.
Scenes and dialogue are taken straight from the book. Including the original format. The whole is told through flashbacks and investigations. The surviving characters give us their feelings on what happened and it's nice to see the format be true to the book.
Angela Bettis did a great job as Carrie. I also like that there is a lot of character development in this movie. You get to see how Carrie feels about certain characters. Also, the interactions with her mother seem more realistic to me. Emilie de ravin did a great job as Chris! Overall, the acting was great.
The suspense leading up to the prom scene was great as well. Now, let's talk about the prom scene! This version shows Carrie's powers take over and she goes into a sort of trance as she kills the prom goers and devastated the town. Up until she gets home, she is still in that trance. Margaret's death is also true to the book.
The ending is bittersweet. Sue saves carrie after Margaret drowns her. The two then run away to Florida. Like I said, bittersweet. But the ending is also ambiguous, you can think of what happens next.
Overall, 4/5. I love this movie! It's the best adaptation, but it could've been just a tad bit better. Check it out if you haven't read it.
Now the 2013 version.
I was very disappointed by this new film. Instead if it being a new adaptation, like they said it was, it was a remake if the 1976 version. They used some dialogue from the book but it's mostly a remake, using the exact same lines from the first one. Some of the actors didn't perform very well. The actress for ms. Desjardin was very dry. The same with sue.
Chloe grace moretz was ok as Carrie, but to be perfectly honest, she's just too pretty. The other two portrayals showed a transformation in look. However this one was the same throughout.
I loved Julianne Moore as Margaret though! She wasn't a babbling crazy person like the first portrayal. I also sense that she has social anxiety.
I have to get the bluray to see this movie again, so I will not be able to have more details until I see it again.
Overall, from my first viewing, I gave it a 3/5. It was a remake, which just turned me off from liking it.
