Hello fellow Chuckyheads.
I saw this section of the board here and I figured I'll contribute by doing a weekly review of a horror or sci fi film. Some will be new, some will be old, some will be simply off the radar.
I am no movie expert, so I won't go into detials about the lighting, or about the previous works of a second unit directer simply because I am not educated enough about what goes into the small detials of film making. (Although I probably know more about Jim Wynorski films than the average person should )
However, I am a movie lover, I have been around long enough to see some of our favorite slashers from their births, and I'd like to think that I am more than qualified to watch a movie and review it from a general audience's persepective.
So I will be doing reviews on a weekly basis. Luckly I have a job that grants me the ability to watch movies on my computer, not that I am bragging but I will anyway, and I can garuntee that I'll be watching something on Netflix that I have never seen before or haven't seen in ages. This doesn't mean I won't be doing reviews on already established mainstream hits, but I will tend to focus more on obsure movies.
With that in mind I give you this weeks review...
2001 Maniacs (2005)
Directed by Tim Sullivan
Written by Tim Sullivan and Chris Kobin
Starring:
Jay Gillespie
Lin Shaye
Giuseppe Andrews
and horror actor Icon
Robert Englund (as if the pic above wasn't going to indicate that)
The basic synopsis of this film is of course college students are looking to venture out for Spring Break vacation and they end up getting detoured to a remote village in which the residents still live in the Civil War days hating the North. What these kids thought to be a reinactment of old days in the South turns out to be more then they bargined for.
As far as the movie itself goes it is definitley not a film to be taken seriously, and the movie itself doesn't take itself seriously. Some could say that the people in this film are overdoing the hick routine but at the same time it is appropriate for the plot this film offers.
The acting of the main stars is decent enough. The main protagonist does a decent job (Jay Gillespie) and some of you might even recognize him from Hellraiser Revelations. Another face you might recognize is Guiseppe Andrews who has more work directing than acting, but has played small roles in bigger movies. His part as the deputy in Cabin Fever comes to mind. We don't get to connect much to these characters, and I don't know if that was the film's intention or if there was simply too much going on in this movie to get to know these charcters. It is safe to say that these characters are 100% disposable.
Of course this movie does it's best to offer up gore, but where some of the effects are crappy looking, there are some that are actually damn decent for this low budgeted film. If it isn't gore that is being sold then it is the all the cleavage and titties. It certainly wouldn't qualifiy as being a Cinemax movie, or anything for a deviant to pull his pants down for, but there is enough eye candy to keep you from getting bored. The amount of hot chicks was a little too unrealistic considereing the village is portraying Southerners from the days of the Civil War. I'd like to think that people were less unkept in those days but then again the women look appropriate for the type of viewer it hopes to reach.
Last, but not least... Robert Englund. Considering this is a low budget, cheesy Horror-Comedy he once again gives an outstanding performance. His role in this film was like drinking wine while eating a bologna sandwich. Was he Freddy?... No, but he did add a touch of class to this movie it wouldn't have had otherwise. He too was goofey at times and that is what this role called for, but he got serious enough for when the tone of the film needed him to be serious. He was easily the smartest of all the hicks in this small town.
Overall I'd give this movie a 2 put of 4 slashes.

It gave me a laugh or 2 and I can see where other's might find it scary at times. I am too primed to say that I found this movie scary, or disturbing, but it was entertaining. It isn't something I can imagine sitting down and watching with my girlfriend or friends, but it certainly made my work day go by a little faster, and it wasn't somthing that made me go back to browse for another movie halfway through because lord knows how many of those I've gone through.
So give it a try. If you have already seen this film then please feel free to give your input.
Til next week...
