Man, I don't even know where to begin, other than to say I thought it was awful. Not as awful as Seed, but awful nonetheless. Seed and Curse are the only movies in the franchise directed by Don Mancini and happen to be the only two I find almost unwatchable, so I doubt I'll be very excited to watch the next if he decides to do another one. This was so bad I'm even starting to doubt his ability to write a decent Chucky movie anymore. Maybe it was all the hype about this being a return to horror, but every single aspect of this movie was stilted, half-assed and/or just plain dumb.
"Chucky, I'm scared!"
*evil laughter*
"You *censored*ing should be!"
"Hehehe!"
Why is Chucky trying to frighten this kid? If I remember correctly, they played "hide and seek" right after this and Chucky locked her in the closet. So the way this scene played out is the girl says she is scared, Chucky bursts into maniacal laughter and says she *censored*ing should be, then he suggests they play hide and seek, and she agrees to that. The girl does not seem to be affected by the cackling, evil demeanor of the doll in any way, and she's like 8 or something. When Chucky threatened Andy he told the cops and his mom, and he was scared, as any kid would be.
The special effects? Embarrassing. Child's Play 2 had better effects, and that was made over 20 years ago. Child's Play 3 had better effects, and I didn't think it could get any worse! When Chucky was walking down the stairs it looked like a video game. In fact, I own video games that look more convincing. I understand that the budget was tight, but a talented director could work around it. I can think of a hundred ways for Chucky to make it down those stairs that don't involve replacing him with a cartoon. The transitions between the normal and evil dolls were glaring, and it seemed like every feature of the doll was different in every shot. One shot his face is slim and normal, the next it's chubby and bloated, and the next just really stupid looking.
The flashback scenes were maybe the worst. Charles Lee Ray is a delusional schizophrenic now? Did that magically stop once he got into the doll, or has he always been this way and just never, not even for a second, displayed this kind of behavior in any of the previous movies? More importantly, who cares? This movie is garbage.
I'll just stop there. I could go on and on, but what's the point? Many of you have already pointed out the many ways this movie squanders every good thing it might have had going for it. I don't think Don Mancini is capable of directing a movie that I would enjoy, and I hope he sticks to writing for the next one, because he stinks.
Short version: Not even close.
2/10
Without Don you wouldn't be a member of this site and you wouldn't be able to talk about or enjoy the Chucky films. It had a low budget and as I just said he tried his best, if you want another Chucky film then I wouldn't criticise him to much, as he might decide to pack it in because no one thinks he's any good.
I'm just saying.
